Desktop Support Technician Job Description

Desktop support technicians dip their fingers in a little bit of everything from diagnosing problems to upgrading equipment. These roles were designed to support and maintain an organization’s technology. They can work onsite or remotely to complete tasks and are responsible for keeping the functionality of the system in line with business goals. Because of the important role they play in managing the company’s computer systems, they are often known as the backbones of the IT department.

Desktop Support Training

Most companies do not require a college degree for those that are looking into entry level desktop support specialist roles. While a formal degree is one option with most majoring in computer science, information technology, or computer engineering, it is also possible to make your way into this role by taking in-person or virtual IT training courses and passing certification exams.

The training you will go through focuses on gaining important software and hardware skills such as installing and troubleshooting programs, applications, and systems. Oftentimes, there is also additional on-the-job training after you get hired that helps you become familiar with the company’s specific setup.

While having good soft skills is valuable, it is always a good idea to stay updated with any types of additional education, training, or certifications.
